"Road to Shootout #37: August 2025 Newsletter,” by Christy Wagner, Editor

ree

In what feels like mere moments ago, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout wrapped up another record-breaking year in August of 2024. The wild waves slowed to a calm, and the bedlam was finally put to rest (until now, of course). As always, the next Shootout loomed just beyond a distant, hazy horizon, full of sweet promises for matchless excitement, endless fun, and, of course, incredible fundraising.

Somehow, it is once again August, but this year could not be more different from last year. For the third time in the Shootout’s 37-year history, the host and race location are changing, and the anticipation is almost tangible in the thick, mid-summer air surrounding us in Central Missouri. The Lake of the Ozarks’ iconic Shootout and the world’s largest unsanctioned boat race is set to kick off what will assuredly be another unforgettable year, and we are here for it.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

Despite the change in location, the countless volunteers who make this grassroots event possible each year remain the same. This event would be, and is, absolutely nothing without its countless Lake area first responders, sponsors, racers, spectators from both near and far, and, most notably, the dedicated volunteers who donate their time, energy, and sometimes sanity to pull off an event of this magnitude each year.

So, why do they do it?

Since the Shootout began in the summer of 1989, it has remained a not-for-profit event. As such, the annual funds raised each year are redirected back to tri-county first responders—namely, our fire departments in the very beginning—and now, more prominently, dozens of crucial, locally serving charities.

Of these 47 deserving recipients, the total amount that each department or charitable entity receives annually is calculated entirely based on volunteer hours accrued throughout the year. Based on each recipient’s total number of hours that year, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Board of Directors determines how much each recipient will receive at the Presentation of Checks Ceremony in November. It really is that simple.

So, how can you help?

To begin with, you can register as a volunteer online at ShootoutHelpers.com. Open shifts can be selected online, and you can choose where your hours go—from Kids’ Harbor, Dogwood Animal Shelter, The Changing Table, Wonderland Camp, Magic Dragon Trails, and more, there are countless entities that could use your help. If you’re looking to give back to our local community in a truly impactful way, look no further than the Shootout.
